The Kantō League is the major college football league in East Japan. Since the 2011 fall season the Kantō League champion plays against the North Japan representative for the East Japan championship. The winner of the East Japan championship plays against the winner of the West Japan championship in the Kōshien Bowl in December for the college championship.

Since the beginning of the 2014 fall season the Division 1 plays in a new format. The old lineup with two conferences and a championship game (Azuma Bowl) was replaced by a split into two subdivisions, the Top 8 and the Big 8. The Top 8 represent the highest level of play. The Top 8 winner will be the league champion. There will be no championship game. The 7th and 8th place teams from the Top 8 will play relegation games against the 1st and 2nd place teams from the Big 8.

For the 2022 season the KCFA again changed the format. In order to eliminate unfairness due to the effects of the COVID-19 related format change for the 2021 season the league implemented a "automatic promotion, no relegation" rule for this season. Therefore the two subdivisions will play with ten teams, split into two blocks (A and B) with five teams each. In the first stage of the season (Primary League) the teams will play round robin games within their blocks. In the second stage the subdivisions will be split in a Top Secondary League with the 1st through 3rd place finishers from blocks A and B and a Lower Secondary League with the 4th and 5th place finishers from blocks A and B. In the Top Secondary League the teams will play against the teams from the opposite block. In the Lower Secondary League the teams will play round robin games. The results from the Primary League games will be carried over.

In the Top 8 the 9th and 10th place teams will be automatically demoted to the Big 8 while the 7th and 8th place teams will play challenge games against the 1st and 2nd place teams of the Big 8.In the Big 8 the 9th and 10th place teams will be automatically demoted to Division 2 while the 5th to 8th place teams will play challenge games against the top four teams of Division 2.
